Indoor living designs manifest in outdoor counterparts by bringing lighting fixtures, decorative accessories and larger tiles with natural textures to the backyard.
Current design trends see an increase in the use of larger format pavers with natural textures and design elements, such as the natural flagstone look of Mega-Arbel® and the cut slate look of Lafitt® Slate Slab, which offer multi-piece, large-format design options.
Design Basics

Belgard® residential pavers come in a number of styles, shapes and tones to help you add the right personality and charm to transform your outdoor living spaces.
Colours
Pavers come in neutral and natural tones such as greys, tans, reds, ivories and blends of each. They can work to complement or harmonize with your existing colour schemes. Pick what you love, but also understand your vision so you pick tones with intent.
Shapes
Paver shapes have evolved over time. Once simple rectangular stones, they now come in a wide assortment of sizes and shapes that can be mixed to look natural or to create geometric patterns. Belgard specializes in irregular shapes that combine to form a less structured stone or flagstone appearance.
Textures
Paver textures can help you subtly accent your design scheme. Our pavers come in several different textures —including smooth and contemporary options, natural stone textures
and rustic antiqued textures.
Borders & Accents
Once you have selected your primary paver, don’t forget to finish the space with borders and accents. You can really show your style and choose to match, complement or contrast your primary paver selection. Have fun with the process and make your space one of-a-kind.
Belgard’s online Project Visualizer allows you to be your own hardscape designer. Choose from our image library of patios, driveways, and walkways, or upload your own photo to experiment with paver styles and colours and explore an infinite number of design possibilities.
Outdoor porcelain tile pavers have the same benefits as regular porcelain – frost-resistant, skid-resistant, durable and easy to clean – combined with incredibly high breakage loads (up to 2,000 pounds) creates the perfect solution for gardens, terraces and high traffic outdoor areas. Exterior porcelain tiles can be dry laid onto grass, gravel, dirt and sand – or onto terraces and roofs using raised supports – without grout, adhesives or specialized workers, making installation incredibly easy.
A hardscape project is an important investment in your home, and selecting the right contractor is a critical decision. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions. It’s important that you get to know your contractor so that you can work together as a team to create your ideal outdoor living space. Here’s a list of FAQ’s you should consider before hiring someone to install your hardscapes.
How do I install my Belgard paving?
Installing hardscapes is a SPECIALIZED SKILL that requires training and experience. Inquire about specialized certifications and training from organizations like the Interlocking Concrete Paver Institute (ICPI). All Belgard® Authorized Contractors are required to have at least one team member who is ICPI certified and must meet annual requirements to maintain the company’s “authorized” status.
How do I know a good Contractor from a bad one?
Ask for CUSTOMER REFERENCES and to see photos of past projects, both for design ideas
and to get a sense of the contractor’s level of creativity, expertise and work ethic. Ask for an address or two and check out the workmanship up close, with the homeowner’s permission of course.
What do I need to consider regarding project management?
Determine upfront which aspects of the project the contractor can handle. Will their team manage aspects like LANDSCAPING, PLUMBING, IRRIGATION AND LIGHTING – or will you be expected to handle this separately?
I'm worried about costs and spiraling out of control?
Be sure to get a complete understanding of PAYMENT TERMS and estimated start date and turn-around time. Any changes made to the original agreement should be made in writing with both parties clearly accepting the new terms or costs in changing the original specifications or scope of work once the ground is broken.
I'm worried about safety and labour warranty. What should I be aware of?
It important to hire a contractor who can provide PROOF OF INSURANCE and is able to guarantee their work for a period of at least one year after the installation. To find a Belgard Authorized Contractor near you, visit Belgard.com/locator
